One of the highlights. The tenor tries to stay awake while the disciples sleep. The oboe plays a beautiful, almost hypnotic solo depicting the struggle against sleep. The choir answers softly each time: 'Thus our sins fall asleep'.
Gethsemane
Ich will bei meinem Jesu wachen
Aria
•Tenor, Chorus
|
No. 21part_24
I will watch with my Jesus.
(Thus our sins fall asleep.)
My death
He atones for in his soul's distress;
His mourning makes me full of joy.
(Therefore must his meritorious suffering,
Right bitter and yet sweet be.)
German
English
Ich will bei meinem Jesu wachen.
(So schlafen unsre Sünden ein.)
Meinen Tod
Büßet seiner Seelen Not;
Sein Trauren machet mich voll Freuden.
(Drum muß uns sein verdienstlich Leiden,
Recht bitter und doch süße sein.)
I will watch with my Jesus.
(Thus our sins fall asleep.)
My death
He atones for in his soul's distress;
His mourning makes me full of joy.
(Therefore must his meritorious suffering,
Right bitter and yet sweet be.)
