This is the first chorale in the Passion. While the opening chorus was a large-scale drama, this is the moment where the Christian community (the choir) responds directly. The function of this piece is self-reflection: one wonders how it is possible that someone who is innocent is punished so severely. It sets the tone for the idea of 'vicarious suffering': the guilt lies not with him, but with humanity.
