This is the first aria of the Passion. The theme is the deepest emotional reaction to one's own sins. The 'spices' sung about are again a reference to the embalming of Jesus. The singer hopes that her repentance (her tears) is just as valuable as the precious oil of the woman in Bethany.

Penitence and remorse
grind the sinful heart in two,
so that the drops of my tears
as an acceptable spice,
faithful Jesus, to thee are offered.

English
Buß und Reu
Knirscht das Sündenherz entzwei,
Dass die Tropfen meiner Zähren
Angenehme Spezerei,

grind the sinful heart in two,

as an acceptable spice,
faithful Jesus, to thee are offered.
Modern adaptation
My heart breaks with regret over everything I have done wrong. I hope my tears have value for you, just like that expensive oil.
