The spiritual heart of the Passion. The soprano sings of 'Love' as the motive for Jesus' sacrifice. The music is unearthly serene, a stark contrast to the shouting for Barabbas that follows.

No. 49part_57
Out of love my Savior is willing to die,
Of any sin he knows nothing,
So that eternal ruin
And the punishment of judgment
May not remain upon my soul.
German
English
Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben,
Von einer Sünde weiß er nichts,
Dass das ewige Verderben
Und die Strafe des Gerichts
Nicht auf meiner Seele bliebe.
Out of love my Savior is willing to die,
Of any sin he knows nothing,
So that eternal ruin
And the punishment of judgment
May not remain upon my soul.
Modern adaptation
Out of pure love my Savior wants to die. He is innocent, so that eternal judgment does not fall on me.

Unique to this aria is the absence of the 'Basso Continuo' (bass line). There is no cello or organ, only a flute and two oboes da caccia. This creates a floating, heavenly effect, as if the music does not touch the ground.
